This information is meant to help using the VST Player of Encore 5 on Windows, to play your scores from Encore with a multitude of instrument sounds and acoustic effects, that are available in a Virtual Studio environment.

A Mac with OSX has everything on board to connect the VST Player directly to Virtual Instruments. A Windows PC requires an extra program and settings. If you do not want to spend money on such a program, you can use (free available) MIDI Yoke. Why and how, is explained below.

Connect VST with MIDI Yoke

MIDI Yoke is a modest computer program, functionally comparable with a set of cables, for connecting MIDI devices. It is used with devices for creating, editing or processing MIDI sound; like MIDI synthesizer, keyboard, echo, mixer, equalizer, interface card. A MIDI connection cable passes MIDI signals through from one device to another. Since MIDI Yoke is a computer program, acting as a cable, we could call it a 'virtual cable'.

The devices, which MIDI Yoke connects, can very well be 'virtual' too. The functions of a MIDI sound mixer, for instance, can be represented in a program, running on the same computer, acting as and looking like a sound mixer. That sound mixer program would be called a 'virtual device'. The MIDI data stream is passed directly from output to input.

Example:

Midi Vst Software

The program MIDI Yoke conducts MIDI signals from programs to programs. Actually, since MIDI Yoke offers 8 MIDI in and 8 MIDI out ports, MIDI Yoke can conduct MIDI signals from eight programs to eight progams.

Virtual Studio Instruments, VSTi

Together, your virtual devices inside your computer can form a Virtual Sound Studio, existing of programs only. That concept - software, representing a set of virtual sound devices - is called Virtual Studio Technology.

Plug-In

On the Internet and in specialized shops, all sorts of programma's are availble, which you can use in your 'virtual studio'. For instance, one Virtual Studio Instrument (VSTi'), can produce the characteristic sound of a specific type of organ, another simulates the reverb characteristics of certain acoustic environment. Some of these VSTi programs are 'stand alone', but a lot of interesting software is realized as 'plug in'. Meaning, you need to connect them to something. This something being - of course - a computer program.

A program like MIDI Yoke is an important element of each Virtual Studio, because it interconnects the devices of your Virtual Studio.

Encore 5 and the VST Player

Encore 5 can play a role in your Virtual Studio, because it has a special connection required, realized in the VST Player. You connect the VST Player via MIDI Yoke to other virtual devices, as desired. Then you can play your scores from Encore 5 utilizing the every virtual instrument sound and acoustic effect that can lay your hands on.

Install MIDI Yoke

The steps to install MIDI Yoke are:

Get the installer for MIDI Yoke 1.75 (or newer) from Internet. Choose the version which is suitable for your version of Windows. Save the installer file (named MidiYokeSetup.msi) to your hard disk.
Varies per Windows-version.
- At XP: go to step 3.
- At Windows 2000: go to step 3.
- At Vista:
- Press both the Windows-key and the key [R] of your keyboard. In the 'Run' dialog, type MSCONFIG and press Enter.
  The dialog System Configuration Utility comes on screen.
- Choose the tab Tools and from there, select the option 'Switch off UAC', then choose Finish.
- Restart your computer.
  UAC, which is known to cause trouble at the installation of MIDI Yoke, is now switched off.
Double click the MIDI Yoke icon, of the installer file that you retrieved from Internet.
Click Next and than Close. Restart your computer again.
The installation of MIDI Yoke is now completed.
- At Vista, only if you love UAC: Repeat the steps at number 2, but then select 'Switch UAC On'.
  MIDI Yoke is now ready to use.

Setup MIDI Yoke and Encore

Click on Start,
- (Windows XP) select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click on Sounds and Audio Devices.
  The dialog 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties' appears, see image.
- (Windows 2000) select Setup, then Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click onSounds and Multimedia.
  The dialog 'Sounds and Multimedia Properties' appears.
At the tab Audio, in the box MIDI music playback choose 'Out to MIDI Yoke: 1' from the pull down list called:
- (Windows XP) Default device
- (Windows 2000) Preferred device
Click on OK.
Install your VST plugins in the folder C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST
In Encore, from the Setup menu, choose MIDI Setup
The MIDI Setup dialog appears.
At both MIDI Out ports, choose MIDI Yoke 1, click on OK.
From the Score menu, choose VST Player
The VST Player dialog appears, see image.
Select the desired virtual instrument from the upper drop down list.
Set the MIDI port to MIDI Yoke 1.

Using MIDI Yoke

Play your music with Encore via the VST Player using virtual instruments

In the VST Player, click the Recording button to record MIDI to a wav-file
In the VST Player, click the Setup button to change audio playback settings
In the VST Player Setup dialog, click the Choose Directory button to select a different folder where you placed VST plugins (if you are not satisfied with the default folder Program FilesCommon FilesVST )
The VST Player enables you to use plugins from four separate modules in one setup. Each module can have its own plugin, plugin settings, presets, MIDI port, and volume controls
In the VST Player, in each of the four module boxes, click the View button to setup the plugin for that module.
A dialog from the plugin program appears, for example the DSK Brass in above picture, or the default dialog.
Each of the four module boxes of the VST Player has a set of volume controls, consisting of a pair of indicators showing the output levels, a slider to change output volume, and a button to reset the volume reduction to 0 dB.
Each of the four module boxes of the VST Player has a MIDI receive indicator, which lights up green, if the VST Player receives MIDI Data.
The VST Player stores all settings in a user file, independent of the score.

Examples

If you use a MIDI synthesizer keyboard for MIDI input source, connect that device to MIDI Yoke 2 port.

In a program to record and play sound samples, like Master Tracks Pro or Cubase, choose the same MIDI channel number that the staff or track that you want to record is using.

Make sure to switch the monitor function ON for that channel.

Suppose you want to use samples from a VSTi plug-in set like Reason, to playback a score from Encore. With MIDI Yoke, you make the required connections.

In Encore MIDI Setup, for MIDI-Out choose MIDI Yoke 1. In the

Set the sample program (Cubase, Reason, Symphonic orchestra) to playback MIDI via MIDI-In 2.

VST Player not opening from Encore?

The VST player will not open from Encore versions 5.0.3.795 to (at least) 5.0.4.875.

These Encore software versions are in error about the name of the folder where the VST player program has been installed.

The Encore program calls for 'VST Player' (it has been renamed), while the folder with the GVOX VST Player.exe in the Encore installation still has the old name: 'GVOX VST Player'.

You can work around the problem in using one of the following two ways.
